| Comment on Concealed guns increase campus safety by Wendy Fri, 01 Aug 2008 18:58:34 +0000 Of all of the gun crimes referenced here, what percentage of those were committed by holders of a legal concealed carry permit? To Bill who is worried about Crazy Scott in the corner blasting people, chances are whether or not law-abiding concealed carry permit holders are allowed to have guns on campus probably won't factor into Crazy Scott's decision to bring one. The only effect those rules will have is to determine whether or not there will be someone around to stop him. |
| Comment on Concealed guns increase campus safety by Paul Fri, 01 Aug 2008 10:13:21 +0000 To Bill (Comment on 20-Mar-08 at 1:34 am): Your writing makes it clear to me that your are intelligent and educated. However .... The domino theory: if one falls, they all must fall. I expect most people can understand the fatal problems with your arguments. The most obvious is just what happens in real life. Should we have a repeat wherein Mr. Lewis is present but unarmed ... well, that would obviously seem to be fatal as he would have few choices beyond pray a prayer and attempt at taking cover all the while hoping the ammunition runs out. (The police will most certainly not arrive in time). The shoot/Don't shoot issue is a problem for anyone including the police. They arrive in time to help mop up the body fluids in most cases - no fault of theirs. Though I agree the we shouldn't have to worry about such individuals and situations, I am concerned that you have not learned enough in you studies. Important FACT: The world is full of such individuals (history is too). If we could snap our fingers and instantly vaporize every weapon not in the hands of Police/Military, the world would be flooded with weapons in no time. People would make them, people would sell them illegally (police/military), and they would divert for personal use leading to guns in the hands of criminals. Same if you vaporize every weapon - police & military included. You simply cannot legislate nor impose morality nor integrity. And then we have poison, knives, bombs ... Accidents will happen too, sad to say. I have been exposed to firearms since age 5. I was stunned at the accidental shooting of a SWAT commander by one of his subordinate officers (a sniper) during a SWAT exercise (no live ammunition was the plan ....). An attorney familiar with the intimates of the case pointed out that unlike said attorney and myself, most officers today have never handled a firearm before the police academy. Said officer violated several core and basic safety procedures that are so ingrained in my mind & habits that it is inconceivable that I could have done more than one of them were I in a total stupor or sleep walking, much less multiple sequential violations. I work at a job that requires intense attention to detail and understanding of these issues. I make a mistake, someone dies. We study the errors in detail. Redundancy is critical. Training equally so. Not 50:50. Takes 100:100 (for all the core issues, not just training and procedures). Even then problems will occur. Information. Logic. Knowledge. Wisdom. Information is not enough yet it is critical. Miss one fact and the result can be deadly. Yet most individuals, scientists (the theoretical ultimate in bias free) fail all the time because of bias in seeing, gathering and interpreting facts. Logic, the theoretical tool equal to the suposed unbiased scientist. The scientists great basic tool. Yet logic leads to many a false equassion - more often false then most realize. The idea is to take the facts and devise a logic about them. Then test the result. Try to break it. See if it holds. Even if you think it does or not, someone decades later may prove otherwise. Revealuate the facts and/or rework the logic. Knowledge - combine the above and mix in experience - broad, unbiased, detailed and digested through years and years. Why do so many cultures revere the elderly. We really have some troubles developing in this regard today. Saul Griffith wrote "to own something you(...) need the skills to operate and maintain it. That was true throughout human history until post (WWII), then all of a sudden you could own a lot of things and have no concept of how they work." (Popular Mechanics, August 2008 pg 16). Saul was talking about 'carbon footprint(s)" but the conept applies here in so many ways. Significantly, regarding the mechanics and details of the conepts above. We "own" freedom individually and collectively. The mechanics are critical and go beyound just a vote and acting on and voicing our conerns. Wisdom goes a step beyound yet incorporates all of the above. Problem is, some never attain wisdom and some seem to have it at an impossibly early age. I have pondered that quite a bit over the years. I have seen it come and go in the same individual too. Obviously, wisdom is usually not total as in all knowing on all issues. Yet some seem to cut right to to quick of a topic they have never studied. Wisdom is almost an enigma. I know that I gained a lot of wisdom from relatives and friends older than I. I am always ready to reevaluate, learn and change my perspective. Yet, principles are like a lighthouse. They are mostly cast mostly in stone and are not moveable (for the most part - consider the ocasional lighthouse moved inland from the eroding shoreline - nature at work and an example that we should never say never - even a principle need be moved on ocasion, bu only ever so slowly, rarely and with extreme caution! Well ... Mutual defense is a common goal for all but the criminal who is not part of the collective group but rather prays on said (sheep) and occasionally comes face to face with a sheep dog (be it police, or just a citizen doing his/her 'job' as a citizen - calling 911 and recording details or using a gun ... whatever). Then said criminal pleads for the protection of the group and if successful, typically learns the lesson and goes off and does it again. Oh so much to discuss, explore, ask and explain. Sufice it to say: My experience is that guns rarely make the individual. Bad is bad for the most part. There are exceptions, just like accidents. I come from a culture rich in the heartland - farming, hunting, fishing, recycling, service (community & military), hads on with mechanical, electrical, humanity ... people often called the 'salt of the earth' or disparaged as "clinging to guns .... religion ... xenophobia" or what ever it was 'he' said. These are some of my personal experiences: Thousands of individuals I would trust with my life (and often have) who are the heart and soul of this country and have given far more than most own firearms and I know of not one who has used them illegally or commited suicide. There are far more good people who own guns than who use them for criminal use. I have used firearms for self defense multiple times and ever fired a shot while doing so. I know many others who can say the same and read of such cases all the time - usually not typically in prime time media! I was on the college rifle team and was a competitive shooter in high school. Decades ago, kids got on the school bus with guns for use after school (competition or hunting), yet it seems guns are the problem. Well, best stop for now. Kind of late to post anyway: IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THEY ARE NOTHING MORE THAN ANOTHER TOOL HUMANS USE FOR GOOD OR BAD? nah .... couldn't be ... |
| Comment on Smoking ban about oppression, not health by Nick Fri, 01 Aug 2008 07:26:14 +0000 Heather, do you think that a stigma should be associated with obese people? People die everyday due to the fact that they are not eating right. Should they be banned from being able to go to any of the less than healthy dining options on campus, or even be asked to no longer eat three burritos from Taco Mayo? |

| Street reopening sends OSU racing toward future 2008-08-02 00:22:12 STILLWATER — The ceremony was short and after a few minutes of "thank yous,” a pistol shot was heard and two homemade dune buggies roared through a ribbon and re-opened a street that had been closed for nearly 3 1/2 years.Within 30 minutes, the barriers were swung to the side, and dozens of cars came rolling through, kicking up what was left of the construction site dust. It was as if it had never been closed in the first place. For some reason, Stillwater resident and OSU grad Lynndell Newby thought there would be more. A marching band. A gang of motorcycles.
